Damascus Lions Club Orchestra

While asking for a Holiday Giving Project report at the Board Meeting, King Lion referred to the Conductor of the project – That made me think??  Train Conductor, Electrical Conductor. Orchestra Conductor – just wondering how she assessed the project!  Whatever kind of Conductor she was talking about, it cannot do it alone!  It takes the WHOLE orchestra to make our Holiday Giving Project happen.  Just like the preparation for an orchestra, we set out our music and everyone follows the notes. Then we set to practice the notes individually.  We learn during the practice that we have a lot of work to do to make the performance a good one!  And so for 8 weeks we continue to toot our horns, clean our reeds, beat out the rhythm and pluck the strings.  And when we come together, we wet the reeds of the woodwinds, gently blend the tones of the brass, pull the rhythm together with the percussion and then let the strings tie everything up!  And when the performance is being presented, the applause comes from within; for it has been an “ORCHESTRA OF LIONS, PARNTERS AND FRIENDS” who has given their ALL to help make a holiday season for many families in our area a bit more tolerable! The Damascus Lions Club makes a tremendous ORCHESTRA! Congratulations for an awesome performance!

December Holiday Project

Thirty families consisting of 90 children and 50 adults received a visit from the Christmas Elves via our Lions members, their families and friends.

The whole project was pieced together by 8 weeks of coordinating our efforts into making it successful.

  • Purchasing an outfit for each child; Lions individually buying toys for each child
  • Sorting the gifts from the Tradesmen Motorcycle Club for each child
  • Packing a stocking filled with necessities for each child
  • Shopping” at our store of foods donated through the school food drives for each family
  • Packing the fresh produce and breads for each family
  • Wrapping the clothes for each child and sorting them into family bags for each family
  • Filling the bags with towels and wash clothes and a throw for each family
  • Purchasing the perishables; selecting a homemade card made by the Leos of Baker Middle School for each family
  • Receiving the boxes of cookies from the Goldstein family
  • Delivering 3-4 boxes of food, 2 -3 bags of gifts to each family
  • Businesses, Friends and Lions sharing their donations to the Holiday Fund
  • Sharing 2 truckloads of non-perishable foods with the HELP Closet

You, your families,  your friends, the Leos – all of you made this happen.  It takes a membership working together to make such a caring and loving project come to fruition.

A sincere THANK YOU to all of you!

Basket Bingo – Oct. 7th 2010

One more time the Damascus Lions have experienced a successful Basket Bingo supporting our Scholarship Program.  The DVFD Activities Building on Friday Night, October 7, was a buzz of bingo players eager to get their game cards, find their assigned seat, tackle some good food from the Fireman and spend some money on the games of chance.

After all the shaking of the bushes for ticket sales and basket sponsors, we started Friday night with all expenses paid in full.  So whatever was spent that evening was profit and that was a good feeling.  That good feeling could only come from the selflessness of individual Lions who sponsored baskets, sold abd bought tickets and rendered their time and energies on Thursday and Friday night.  Thank you, Lions, so much for your support.  Should anyone who sponsored a basket need a written receipt,, please contact Lion Mary Frances.  Letters and acknowledgement of sponsors/donations were mailed to non-Lions.  Should you see Fireman Ronnie Watkins, thank him for being our bingo caller.  And also, Fireman Mike Zeigler, thank him for taking care of our games of chance as well as helping with bingo winners on the floor.  There were also other fireman who helped with setting up of the tables and chairs as well as putting the chairs away. They made it easy for us!

Lion Tess Gladhill filled the baskets with the help of Mary Kay and Tastefully Simple consultant’s donations.  Lions Su and Shye donated a basket of wine and accessories and Lions Rusty and Dee donated a wheelbarrow full of wine, autumn décor , cheeses and accessories which was a separate raffle. Partner-In-Service, Jennifer Molesworth, worked packaging the bingo game cards and Special cards as well as did all the mailing of the fliers.

We sold 130 tickets for our bingo, 22 Lions put in approximately 200 hours on the project and we earned a profit of $4900.  WOW, Can’t believe it!

Thanks to all of you, Lions and Partners-in-service, for your support.  You are the best!

About the Holiday Giving Project

The Damascus Lions have been in the Holiday Giving Project since its inception. In fact, it was the Damascus Lions who began the project in the early 1950s.  The Lions collected used clothing and toys and gave food to families in the area that Lions were familiar with that needed assistance.  It may have been one or two families at that time but it was a well received project.  As time passed by, Damascus Help became involved and provided the nearly new clothing and purchased some clothing.  The Lions would collect and purchase the food and deliver to the assigned families, sometimes upward to 60 families. Help started keeping a list of area families that were in need.  Our Lion Members, Hilda and Ken Diggs, heralded Help in so many different ways.  Upon Hilda’s illness and around 1995, DELIA, Damascus Ecumenical Layman’s Association, along with Help administered the program and at that point, the Lions took  30 families as we then needed to purchase the clothing and the toys ourselves..  And about 6 years ago we added Thanksgiving to our project. Thus, the plan we follow today went into effect.  Today Faith Connections, Inc. administers this up-county project serving upward to 300 families. The families must apply for this assistance through the county.  This is where Faith Connections get the names. With their program, families getting multiple deliveries of food and gifts are almost nonexistent.  Great Program!

View the November time line and the December time line.  Assisting with the Holiday Giving Project this year is, Lions Chris Fletcher who does all the contacting of the families and profiling them, Bob Newlin, who coordinates the non-perishable food drives with the schools and Barbara Barry, who is my Co-Chairman.

Thanksgiving, we will deliver food only to our families. We are offering families a choice of meats this year so when the teams pick up the food to deliver, we will need to take a bit more time to make sure we have the correct meat for each family.  Usually each family will have two boxes of food – enough for the Thanksgiving dinner, items for lunches, soups and another meal of pasta etc.   We will purchase eggs, milk, butter, bread, potatoes, fruit, onions and the meat.

For Christmas, names of children will be distributed at the Nov. 16th meeting to Lions who would like to purchase a gift for a child.  The guideline for the gift is a value of $25.00.  A Shopping Team will purchase an outfit for each child spending approx. $30 per child.  We will also purchase a family gift.  Again we will pack up to three food boxes for delivery along with the gifts for each family.

A family in the community bakes and donates homemade bread for Thanksgiving and cookies for Christmas for each family.

The Lions prefer to deliver our food and gifts to the respective families.  It has become a part of experiencing the spirit of the Holidays for us.  We encourage signing up to support the project.  Should you have any questions, please direct them to Lion Barbara Barry or Lion Mary Frances Gosnell.

Damascus Community Fair

A wave of freshly popped popcorn wafted through the Damascus Community Fair early Friday AM, Sept. 10 as we prepared for approximately 200 children from area schools.  And once we started, the popper, it didn’t stop until Sunday at 3 pm.  The old “Grampers” popper is getting tired; it is slowing down big time; It has been popping for 18 years.  Lion Roy Stanley was kind enough to loan us his popper for the weekend. Thanks Roy. . That enabled us to keep up with the demand Friday and Saturday.   On Sunday, we ran only one popper and people waited in line to get their free popcorn.

Approximately 1950 bags of popcorn were consumed with some fair goers coming back for more.
That aroma sure does attract folks. There were 17 Lions who gave of their time during the weekend and we clocked about 110 hours of fun and labor.

Thanks to all who helped.  We truly needed you. Thanks to the Baker Leos for stamping the popcorn bags; also to our “Popcorn “mascot, Lion Lenora Kish’s grandson, for donning his outfit and handing out popcorn to the fairgoers.

The Damascus Community Fair is the town’s best kept secret.  And the Damascus Lions sure have a niche in that secret!

Basket Bingo: Members – Help Needed!

Friday, October 8th,  – WOW it is this week!

The Damascus Lions Basket Bingo is at the DVFD Activities Center on Lewis Drive.  That is what the flyer says!!

Everything is all ready except for selling tickets.  I can not emphasize enough that for any fund raiser to be successful, we must actively sell tickets.  Have you asked anyone if they would like to play Bingo? Have you bought a ticket?  We are seeking sponsors as well.  Our Scholarships are funded through this activity.  All the more reason to give your support.

Setting up for the bingo will be Thursday at 7 pm.  We will be setting up the tables and chairs which  requires some strong arms and sorting and filling the baskets.    We need your help for about an hour or so.

The doors open for the bingo on Friday at 5:30.  Lions are needed to help with selling at the door and should arrive around 5 pm to get set up.  We need Lions to be on the floor to call back Bingo for the winners,  take the basket/pottery to the winner,  distribute door prizes, etc.   We also need help putting the table and chairs back after the bingo.

Tickets are $20 per person.  Seating is by reservation.

Call or email Lion Mary Frances if you can help either or both nights. -  Also if you want to buy some tickets. 301-829-1002   grangosnell1674@yahoo.com
