Damascus Lions at the Fitness Expo

The NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo was held Saturday, January 16, 2010

Eight members of the Damascus Lions Club worked the first shift with the Lions Community Outreach Foundation’s Vision and Hearing Bus located at the Washington DC Convention Center.  The set up and coordination was lead by LCOF President Charlie Kearse who did an excellent job in coordinating Glaucoma Screening conducted by certified personnel and located at the Lions site.  Vision, Glaucoma Screening and Pre-School Screening was located outside the LCOF Bus with Hearing Screening and consultation with specialist conducting the Glaucoma Screening done within the bus.

Thanks to those that signed up and attended from our Club:  King Lion Mary Frances Gosnell and Lions Tony and Barbara Barry, Charlie Hertel, Jerry Mallack, Wayne Marr, Gary Rogers, and Mike Thornett.

Health and Fitness Expo – Help Needed

The upcoming NBC4 Fitness Expo will be held at the Washington Convention Center.  Our club has signed up for a shift on Saturday, Jan. 16th from 9-11:30am.  We need about 10 people to fully cover the shift.  So far seven people have signed up, not counting Lions Tony and Barbara Berry – Lion Tony will be wearing the Lion’s costume and Lion Barbara will be walking around with him, so they really don’t count for helping with the screenings.   So we still need a few members to volunteer to help with the Vision and Hearing and Preschool Screening.
We will meet at the High School parking lot right across from Weis at 7:15-7:30am to car pool down to the Shady Grove Metro Station get on Metro around 8:00am to arrive at the Convention Center for our 9:00am shift.

Damascus Heritage Day

The Damascus Lions Club participated in the 2nd Annual Damascus Heritage Day that was held on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009.

The weather was beautiful, the various vendors delightful, the Turkey Shoot interesting, the music provided by local musicians was wonderful and loud, and the Lions that participated had a great time.

I wish to thank Lion Tuck Woodfield for his assistance in setting up the tent for the Lion’s display.  I wish to thank Lions Marcia Holpuch; who should be recognized for being the “Greenest Lion” there by peddling her bike to the event, Lion Ann Davis, Lion Frank Burlas, Lion Joy Schwab and Lion Tom Jackson for their help and assistance with the Lions’ booth.  We had several people inquire into our service activities where upon we supplied brochures and membership information.  The “Golden Lion Star” goes to Lion Ann Davis for her efforts in selling our “Papa John Fundraiser Cards”; she sold 10 through out the day and she also sold tickets for the upcoming Basket/Pottery Bingo.   Well done Lion Ann!  And I wish to thank KL Mary Frances and Lion Joy for putting together the information sheets and posters that were displayed in our booth.  It looked great.  I must add that a good time was had by all!

Thanks again for those that came out and hung out and worked at the Lions Booth.

Flea Market Fund Raiser

We had a beautiful day for the Damascus Lions Club Flea Market Fund Raiser and attendance was good despite our new location this year.  I wish to thank IPP Eloise and Lion Tucky Woodfield for their help in attending meetings in connection with the Celebrate Damascus Days; their help in setting up the vendor spots on Friday and their help before the event.

I wish to thank KL Mary Frances for her help setting up the vendor spots on Friday and her assistance all day Saturday during the event.

I also wish to thank the following Lions for their assistance in getting up early Saturday morning and to the commuter parking lot to assist vendors signing in and locating their spots and in directing them to the vendor parking:

Secretary Ken Phillips, Lion Tony Barry, Lion Wayne Marr, Lion Mike Thornett, Lion Tom Jackson, Lion Warren Schwab.

For those Lions that helped man the Gazebo and handing out membership information and answering questions and for helping clean the grounds afterwards:

KL Mary Frances Gosnell, Lion Joy Schwab, Lion Midge Tench, Lion Ann Davis, Lion Gary Rogers, Lion Barbara Barry, Lion Charlie Stone, Lion Carol Stone, Lion Lee Sellers, Lion Bill Mahylis and a  brief appearance by Lion Jennifer Warfield.

Also I wish to thank those Lions that where unable to attend and those that did attend that made money contributions to help make the Flea Market Fund Raiser a success this year.
Special thanks goes to the Clarksburg Branch of the Damascus Lions Club for their donation of the Portable Potty at the Flea Market
