White Cane Days Spring 2011

Thank you, all Lions who participated in our Spring 2011 White Cane fundraiser. We raised $1,674.44. This collection will fund about 16 eye appointments and new glasses for needy Damascus-area citizens. Only twenty-four Damascus Lions contributed to White Cane week this time; so many Lions had to work two or more shifts to make up the difference. Please put “Lion” in front of every name in this article. I can’t afford the fines.

Special Recognitions:

  • Three Over-$100-in-One-Shift Club Recognitions go to:
    • Charlie and Marcia Holpuch, who collected $167.88 at Red Rooster on Saturday.
    • George Hibbard, who collected $111.00  at Tom & Rays, also on Saturday.
    • Jack Peters, who collected $110.07 at Safeway on Wednesday evening.

Charlie Hertel and Barbara Barry just missed $100 by only a tiny bit each.

  • The Bert Lahr Special Award for Most Courageous Lion goes to the five Lions who worked four-hour shifts in order to fill the unassigned shift that followed them: these Lions were: Jack Peters, Charlie Hertel, George Hibbard, and the Holpuchs.

Here are the wonderful Damascus Lions who gave unselfishly of their time for one or more storefront collection shifts (multiple shifts in parentheses): Babb (First Time!!), B. Barry, Davidson, Davis, Dennell, Gladhill, Gosnell, C. Hertel (2), Hibbard(3), C. Holpuch (2), M. Holpuch (2), Mahylis, Mallack, Molesworth, Peters(2), Rogers, W. Schwab, Snapp, C. Stone, Ch. Stone, Suddath, B. Warfield, J. Warfield, Washington. Special thanks go to our reliable Managers of the Day: Bill Mahylis, Ken Phillips, and Del Mayhew…and to our ever-meticulous Money Counters: Del Mayhew, Gary Rogers, George Hibbard, and Vi Hibbard (George’s wife).

As always, when patronizing the Damascus establishments which support White Cane (CVS, Safeway, Tom & Ray’s, & Red Rooster), please express your gratitude to the management for allowing White Cane Lions to do our work there. They are critical to our success. Thanks.

White Cane Days Fall 2010

Thank you, all Lions who participated in our Spring 2010 White Cane fundraiser. We raised $1,857.44. This collection will fund about 18 eye appointments and new glasses for needy Damascus-area citizens. Thirty-four Damascus Lions contributed to White Cane week this Fall. Please put “Lion” in front of every name in this article. If I had to pay a fine, I’m so broke I would have to take it out of the White Cane revenues.

Special Recognitions:

Three Over-$100-in-One-Shift Club Recognitions go

  • to:
    • Bill Mahylis, who collected $154.78 on Friday at 4:00 PM at Safeway West; and
    • Barbara Barry (AGAIN!), with $124.17 on Thursday same place same time
  • The Bert Lahr Special Award for Most Courageous Lion goes to the husband of Carol Cook who, when Carol called him from her homeward commute, rushed to Safeway Thursday evening to begin her shift in her place. Jack Peters fitted him out with a vest and he was good to go! Lions select good spouses; it’s a fact. Thank you sir, for you Lion Spouse courage!

Here are the Damascus Lions who gave unselfishly of their time for one or more storefront collection shifts (multiple shifts in parentheses): B. Barry, Burlas(2), Carr, Cook, Davidson, Davis, Gladhill, Gosnell, C. Hertel, Hibbard(2), C. Holpuch, M. Holpuch, Jackson, Mahylis, Mallack, Molesworth, Peters(2), D. Reichmeider, R. Reichmeider, Rogers, J. Schwab, W. Schwab, Stanley, C. Stone, Ch. Stone, Suddath, Tench, Thornett, B. Warfield, J. Warfield, Washingon, E. Woodfield, T. Woodfield. Special thanks go to our reliable Managers of the Day: Bill Mahylis, Ken Phillips, and Del Mayhew…and to our ever-meticulous Money Counters: Del Mayhew, George Hibbard, and Tom Jackson (and me). The picture shows our final product at the Marr dining room table.

Many more Lions participated than did so last Spring, and because of that participation, we collected much more. Also, we are grateful to include in our collections over $340 from the Clarksburg Branch from last May! The White Cane collection from our Clarksburg Lions is really making a big difference for all of us. As always, when patronizing the Damascus establishments which support White Cane (CVS, Safeway, Tom & Ray’s, & Red Rooster), please express your gratitude to the management for allowing White Cane Lions to do our work there. They are critical to our success. Thanks.

Help Needed for White Cane Days May 5-8

Damascus Lions!  Our next Damascus White Cane fundraiser is the week of May 5-8.

I will push the signup sheet around during this meeting and I’ll pick up the stragglers at the mid-April meeting. Folks: this fundraiser needs the participation of every able-bodied Damascus Lion for at least one two-hour shift. When the sign-up sheet reaches you, please contribute at least one shift; two, if you can. Every two shifts bring us enough funds to provide an eye appointment and new glasses for some needy Damascus-area child or adult. We will have shifts at both doors of Safeway this time, in the hopes that this will help us increase our collections there.

Thank you, all Damascus Lions, for your help with this fundraiser over the years.

White Cane Fundraiser Spring 09

white_cane_photo2Thank you, all Lions who participated in our Spring 2009 White Cane fundraiser. We raised $1,645.62. This amount includes $139.96 from the Clarksburg Branch. This collection will fund about 16 eye appointments and new glasses for needy Damascus and Clarksburg area citizens.

It takes a lot of Lions to make White Cane Week successful. Over 30 Damascus and Clarksburg Lions contributed to White Cane week this Spring. Put “Lion” in front of every name in this article.

Special Recognitions:

• The Over-$100-in-One-Shift Club Recognition goes to Marcia Holpuch: $139.96 is what she received on Saturday morning at Red Rooster. The Saturday morning Red Rooster crowd is very special. Consisting almost entirely of men about to embark on a 6th day of work in their vans and pickups, this crowd is amazingly generous; placing many $5 and $10 bills into our white buckets.

• The Bert Lahr Special Award for Most Courageous Lion goes to Bill Mahylis. Bill was the Wednesday White Cane Manager-of-the-Day, but decided he would fill in the best he could for an empty shift at Safeway that afternoon at 4:00pm. Even though he had to interrupt the shift to collect from other Lions, he managed to collect $99.43 in the short time he had available! Bill has always been one to put in extra effort during White Cane Week. There are many others.

I don’t have the information from the Clarksburg Branch (next time?), but here are the Damascus Lions who gave unselfishly of their time for one or more storefront collection shifts (multiple shifts in parentheses): Alsant (first-time!), T. Barry, B. Barry, Burlas(2), Davidson, Gladhill, Gosnell(2), C. Hertel, Hibbard(2), M. Holpuch, Mahylis, Mallack, Molesworth, Peters(2), D. Reichmeider, R. Reichmeider, G. Rogers, J. Schwab, W. Schwab, Snapp, Ch. Stone, C. Stone, Suddath, Tench, Thornett, Bobbie Warfield, John Warfield, T. Woodfield, E. Woodfield. Special thanks also go to the venerable Managers of the Day: Bill Mahylis, Ken Phillips, and Del Mayhew. And let’s not forget our trustworthy Money Counters: Del Mayhew, George Hibbard, Tom Jackson, and Tom Van Vliet.
