Cleaning out the Medical Closet

Friday morning, January 29, started out at a chilly 15 degrees. But still six of our hardy and well bundled up Lions showed up around 9 o’clock to help me clear out and clean up the medical loan closet of its overflowing contents. Within a little over an hour we had 2 full size pick-up trucks and two trailers loaded – Thanks Lion Warren and Lion Tony for bringing them.

We also had two smaller pick up trucks – Thanks to Lions Tuck and Eloise Woodfield and Lion Tom Jackson. All except for Lion Tom’s truck (loaded with only crutches) headed out to the BRETHERN CENTER in New Windsor, MD, to be distributed throughout the world as needed. Lion Tom’s truck went to Hopkins Children Center in Baltimore to be sent to Haiti which became quite an adventure as told here by Lion Tom.  (Tom”s Story).  Thanks to Lions Tom, Tony, Warren, Eloise, Tuck and Mary Francis. Your time and help is very much appreciated by me and you have helped to make a difference in someone’s life.

Tom’s Story: I got to the Children’s Center without any difficulty.  There was even a place to park right in front of the main door.   I should have known that was too easy.  The stock room they were storing the crutches in was overflowing.  So they sent me to the main hospital.   When I got there, first the officers out front didn’t know anything about crutches being delivered there.  After I explained the Children’s Center said they couldn’t take any more, they sent me inside to talk to the chief of security.   The chief said, yep, they had been taking the overflow, but now they were overflowing and had no more room.  So she called the lady who was coordinating the whole thing.  The lady was still at home, but about to leave for work.  But she wanted me to deliver them to her home if I would.   I said fine.  So I traipse off to somewhere in NE Baltimore (I saw parts of Baltimore I didn’t know existed, plus I went by Pimlico) to find this lady’s townhouse.   I got there just as she was leaving.  She wanted to keep track of how many pairs we delivered (67 it turns out) and she wanted me to tape the pairs together so they don’t get separated.  Her garage was already overflowing.  She had collected nearly 1200 pairs, counting ours.  Anyhow, trying to match up the pairs got to be an adventure because some didn’t seem to match any of the others, plus the tape used to hold them together froze so it wouldn’t unwrap.   Anyhow, they all got delivered, and I am now familiar with parts of Baltimore that few of us have seen.

Holiday Baskets Report

EXTRAORDINARY –– Beyond what is usual!

Past President Dave Davidson used the word EXTRAORDINARY to describe accomplishments of the Damascus Lions and their activities some years ago.  The word came to mind when I was trying to explain what happened on Friday, December 18, the night before the snow storm.

The Damascus Lions rallied around a Christmas Giving Project and made it happen before the storm hit – in fact, completed the deliveries just an hour before the snow began.  And that is EXTRAORDINARY!!

Yes, we made it happen and thanks to all who helped with the project from the beginning to the finish line.  The Delivery Teams came forth with renewed energy, members came that had not planned to help on Friday to help put it all together, putting their personal chores and committments aside. They all were willing to do whatever had to be done to get the food and gifts to the 34 families which included 68 children and 58 adults.

The projections for the Christmas Giving Project are that it cost us $ 3,037 and it took 48 Lions, Partners-in-service, children and Leos working approximately 197 hours to make it happen.  Each family received nonperishable food for their dinner and surplus for their pantry, ham, milk, eggs, potatoes, butter, bread, dinner rolls, homemade cookies by the Goldsteins, filled Christmas Stocking, oranges, candy canes, towels and wash clothes , toys  and an outfit for each child.

We have estimated that the School Food Drives collected approximately 12,000 items of food this year.  Four pick-up loads of food were taken to the HELP Closet.

Thanks go to all Lions for purchasing a gift for each child, Bob Newlin for organizing the School Food Drives, Chris Fletcher for contacting and profiling the families, Ray Molesworth for coming forth and taking a leadership role on Friday and all Lions and Partners-in-service who put others before self in completing the project.

As I can’t remember who coined this phrase but I am saying it from the heart – God Bless you all real good!

Eyeglasses for Liberia

Shown below are Lions Del Mayhew, our Delegate to Lions Community Outreach Foundation, and Martin Carr Chairman of International Affairs for us.  Lion Del is presenting one of 20 some boxes of used eyeglasses to Lion Martin for shipment to Monrovia, Liberia.

The Damascus Lions Club collects used eyeglasses in the Damascus and Clarksburg areas.  The Club generally collects approximately 4000 pairs in a year.  The glasses are cleaned, repaired, calibrated and sorted for use in Third World Countries at two District Recycling Centers.

Lion Martin made arrangements as a team member of a United Methodist Mission Tripfor the Monrovia Lions in Liberia to have a clinic whereby Liberians could be fitted with used glasses donated to our Lions.  Lions Martin and Del secured 8500 pair of ready-to-wear, boxed used eyeglasses from our recycling center to be shipped to Monrovia Liberia from the Damascus Lions Club.    Thanks to the Damascus Community for helping to make it possible for another person to see!

Thanksgiving Food Baskets

holiday givingThe Thanksgiving Project was completed before we could stop to think about it.  We packed a turkey dinner complete with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cake mix, cranberry sauce, veggies and yams for 30 families as well as milk, bread, eggs and butter.  Also were included peanut butter and jelly, pasta and sauce, soups, Mac & Cheese and Ramen Noodles.  The sorter and packers on Friday afternoon went straight to work, brushing their hands off for a job well done within 2 and half hours. The Pick-up and Delivery Haulers of the School Food Drives moved a lot of food. Ten Teams arrived at the “packing house” on Saturday morning ready to move the boxes onto their trucks and move out. Within an hour, all were traveling to their destinations. It was a tremendous team effort both days.

Noted donations were approximately 7000 items received from Rocky Hill Middle School Food Drive, 3300 items from Damascus High School (they split theirs with the Lions and Help), Homemade Pumpkin Bread from Mark and Karen Goldstein, approximately 150 food items collected by Lion Rick Kendall, dinner rolls, yams, cranberry sauce and Ramen noodles by Haung Distributing, boxes by Eagle Components and Moyer Moving and Storage and apples from Rock Hill Orchard.

Forty–one Lions worked approximately 150 hours; and the project had a cash cost outlay of $1,037.

It was an awesome accomplishment.  Those less fortunate this Thanksgiving had a great meal to look forward to as well as some lunches for the children.  Thanks Lions for a great job of serving our community.
