White Cane Days Spring 2011

Thank you, all Lions who participated in our Spring 2011 White Cane fundraiser. We raised $1,674.44. This collection will fund about 16 eye appointments and new glasses for needy Damascus-area citizens. Only twenty-four Damascus Lions contributed to White Cane week this time; so many Lions had to work two or more shifts to make up the difference. Please put “Lion” in front of every name in this article. I can’t afford the fines.

Special Recognitions:

  • Three Over-$100-in-One-Shift Club Recognitions go to:
    • Charlie and Marcia Holpuch, who collected $167.88 at Red Rooster on Saturday.
    • George Hibbard, who collected $111.00  at Tom & Rays, also on Saturday.
    • Jack Peters, who collected $110.07 at Safeway on Wednesday evening.

Charlie Hertel and Barbara Barry just missed $100 by only a tiny bit each.

  • The Bert Lahr Special Award for Most Courageous Lion goes to the five Lions who worked four-hour shifts in order to fill the unassigned shift that followed them: these Lions were: Jack Peters, Charlie Hertel, George Hibbard, and the Holpuchs.

Here are the wonderful Damascus Lions who gave unselfishly of their time for one or more storefront collection shifts (multiple shifts in parentheses): Babb (First Time!!), B. Barry, Davidson, Davis, Dennell, Gladhill, Gosnell, C. Hertel (2), Hibbard(3), C. Holpuch (2), M. Holpuch (2), Mahylis, Mallack, Molesworth, Peters(2), Rogers, W. Schwab, Snapp, C. Stone, Ch. Stone, Suddath, B. Warfield, J. Warfield, Washington. Special thanks go to our reliable Managers of the Day: Bill Mahylis, Ken Phillips, and Del Mayhew…and to our ever-meticulous Money Counters: Del Mayhew, Gary Rogers, George Hibbard, and Vi Hibbard (George’s wife).

As always, when patronizing the Damascus establishments which support White Cane (CVS, Safeway, Tom & Ray’s, & Red Rooster), please express your gratitude to the management for allowing White Cane Lions to do our work there. They are critical to our success. Thanks.

March 2011 Blood Drive Report

Our second blood drive with Inova Blood Donor Services was held on March 28.  It was great to see that we had donors waiting at the door prior to the start of the blood drive and, we also received more positive feedback about Inova. We collected 35 units of blood during this drive and will strive to do all we can to increase that number.  Did you know that 35 units of blood have the ability to save up to 105 lives?

I would like to thank the following people for their help in making calls, canteen, reception and set-up: King Lion Marcia, Lions and friends Bill Mahylis, Charlie Hertel, Chris Fletcher, Dennis Babb, Jerry Mallack, Jerry Warfield, Ken Phillips, Marie Didone, Pattu Druairaj, Ray Hertel, Tom Jackson, Virginia Hertel and Wayne Marr.

December Holiday Project

Thirty families consisting of 90 children and 50 adults received a visit from the Christmas Elves via our Lions members, their families and friends.

The whole project was pieced together by 8 weeks of coordinating our efforts into making it successful.

  • Purchasing an outfit for each child; Lions individually buying toys for each child
  • Sorting the gifts from the Tradesmen Motorcycle Club for each child
  • Packing a stocking filled with necessities for each child
  • Shopping” at our store of foods donated through the school food drives for each family
  • Packing the fresh produce and breads for each family
  • Wrapping the clothes for each child and sorting them into family bags for each family
  • Filling the bags with towels and wash clothes and a throw for each family
  • Purchasing the perishables; selecting a homemade card made by the Leos of Baker Middle School for each family
  • Receiving the boxes of cookies from the Goldstein family
  • Delivering 3-4 boxes of food, 2 -3 bags of gifts to each family
  • Businesses, Friends and Lions sharing their donations to the Holiday Fund
  • Sharing 2 truckloads of non-perishable foods with the HELP Closet

You, your families,  your friends, the Leos – all of you made this happen.  It takes a membership working together to make such a caring and loving project come to fruition.

A sincere THANK YOU to all of you!

November Food Drive – Updated

It was a sight to be seen when the Huang Box Truck backed into the storage area of Damascus Motors on Thursday afternoon.  It was piled high with boxes of food collected by the Rocky Hill Middle School Leo Club – some 3776 items. What a haul!  I understand the eighth graders received the reward for collecting the most cans.  And then on Friday, just as several Lions had finished sorting food for the Thanksgiving delivery, in came that Box Truck again with another load – this time from DHS. Three service clubs at DHS joined their energies for another big collection.  They placed a box in Safeway which was nicely done and I understand, stood at the gate of the football games collecting.  What a great idea!

We selected a menu of foods to deliver for Thanksgiving from the canned goods, purchased peanut and jelly for each family as well as the perishables and a turkey. The Goldstein Family delivered their tastefully baked and trimmed pumpkin bread for each family. Rock Hill Orchard donated apples for each family as well.

From beginning to end, the Thanksgiving Project had 44 Lions, family and friends assisting with making it happen, burning about 185 hours and costing us $ 1,367.00.  We served 30 families all with children totaling  140 family members.

My THANKS goes out to all who participated – wherever you gave assistance from sorting food to packing boxes to delivering the food.  All of which makes the project happen because Lions say “WE Serve!” Thanks to   Lion Chris Fletcher for profiling all the families and Lion Bob Newlin for managing the Food Drives.

Md Cycling for Sight at Damascus

*UPDATED* The cyclists rode into Damascus Saturday, June 19 meeting up with their cause to ride -   Lion Aqulla Harris, who has arrived ahead of the cyclists accompanied by Lion Donna Starkweather.  Lion Aquilla had two eye surgeries a year ago in May and is preparing to go back to Michigan for two or three more procedures.  Lion Aquilla was blind in one eye and the sight in the other eye was fading very swiftly.  Since the surgery, she has been able to see out of both eyes  – only she sees double everything. With the next few procedures she is hoping to gain 20/20 vision.  She needs funds  for transportation to Michigan and for lodging while she is there as the procedures are out-patient ones.

Thus the reason the cyclists, who are members of the Maryland Cycling for Sight Lions Club, Inc., were taking a 50 mile ride.  They started at Sandy Spring Sherwood High School; proceeded  to Damascus and then traveling to Laytonsville and back to Sherwood High School  The day was a bit muggy and warm but the cyclists were prepared.  There were 7 of them, two of whom were riding a bicycle built-for-two.

The Maryland Cycling for Sight Lions Club do fund raisers to assist those with sight problems. Their Lions meetings on held online. Their members are from Aberdeen to Cecilton to Alexandria to Laytonsville.

Six  Damascus Lions greeted the cyclist as they came into town on Route 108 with signs welcoming them as well as  having water, fruit and snacks for them.  We gathered around the gazebo at the Park N Ride.  King Lion presented Lion Mike Layman, President of the Cycling Club, a check for $100 to be used for the Lion Aquilla Harris Fund.
