Shown below are Lions Del Mayhew, our Delegate to Lions Community Outreach Foundation, and Martin Carr Chairman of International Affairs for us. Lion Del is presenting one of 20 some boxes of used eyeglasses to Lion Martin for shipment to Monrovia, Liberia.

The Damascus Lions Club collects used eyeglasses in the Damascus and Clarksburg areas. The Club generally collects approximately 4000 pairs in a year. The glasses are cleaned, repaired, calibrated and sorted for use in Third World Countries at two District Recycling Centers.

Lion Martin made arrangements as a team member of a United Methodist Mission Tripfor the Monrovia Lions in Liberia to have a clinic whereby Liberians could be fitted with used glasses donated to our Lions. Lions Martin and Del secured 8500 pair of ready-to-wear, boxed used eyeglasses from our recycling center to be shipped to Monrovia Liberia from the Damascus Lions Club. Thanks to the Damascus Community for helping to make it possible for another person to see!

What will the Lions Club do with my Eyeglasses?

Lions help to conserve sight by providing usable eyeglasses to children and adults throughout the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 153 million people have uncorrected refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism). Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in undeveloped nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to fight the problem with the Lions Recycle For Sight Program.

Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families. It is estimated that Lions clubs collect more than 20 million glasses each year, and eyeglass recycling is one of Lions’ clubs most popular activities. Although the program was officially adopted by the association in 1994, Lions have collected glasses for more than 80 years.
