Area Lions Clubs will dip ice cream at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair from Friday August 13 to Saturday August 21, 2010.

White Cane Days – Spring 2010

Thank you, all Lions who participated in our Spring 2010 White Cane fundraiser. We raised $1,438.10. This collection will fund about 14 eye appointments and new glasses for needy Damascus-area citizens. Twenty-six Damascus Lions contributed to White Cane week this spring. Please put “Lion” in front of every name in this article. I can’t afford the fines.

- Ø Barbara Barry at CVS on Thursday evening; she solicited $101.20.
- Ø Bill Mahylis at Safeway on Thursday evening; he pulled in $103.31.
- Ø Warren and Joy Schwab at Safeway on Friday evening; they collected $105.95.
The Bert Lahr Special Award for Most Courageous Lion goes to three first-timer Lions: Cheryl Wyatt, Carol Cook, and Alice Denell. It is refreshing to have new Lions take part in White Cane. And they all did a great job.

Do you have any special stories about unusual occurrences during White Cane Week? Please provide them to me and I’ll see that they get published.
For the first time, we worked both entrances of the new Safeway. It worked out great. However, doing this added eight new shifts to our shift list. Since we had three fewer Lions participating than last fall, this caused us to have about eight empty shifts! We need more Lions to participate in White Cane. That is the only thing holding us back from increasing our receipts very substantially. Mark your calendars for the Fall White Cane fundraiser: September 22-25, 2010.
When patronizing the Damascus establishments which support White Cane (CVS, Safeway, Tom & Ray’s, & Red Rooster), please express your gratitude to the management for allowing White Cane Lions to do our work there. Without their assistance, there would be no Damascus White Cane. Thanks.

Damascus Lions Big Band Event

The Lions’ Big Band Dance was held on April 17, 2010. The Damascus Lions once again provided the community with a great night of the Big Band sounds! This was another successful event for the Damascus Lions in service to the community.
We had a good turnout for only our second year at the American Legion Hall. The weather was most cooperative in providing excellent temperatures for eating, socializing, and of course, dancing. The food was superb and the crowd was dynamic.
In much anticipated form, Mr. Roland Cumberland, the band director at 91 years of age, brought us a marvelous performance. The band was magnificent! And the singers, as always were at their best! Everyone had a great evening as the time flew by!! It was the kind of night that makes you unable to wait until next year.
Our success was the result of hard work by many Damascus Lions who deserve a warm round of applause for serving the community at the Big Band event of 2010.

Pancake Breakfast a Success!

The Spring Pancake Breakfast and Bake/Craft Table event was held on Saturday, March 20, from 7–11am at Damascus United Methodist Church. On Friday, March 19th, the setup helpers made the dining room ready. Those who helped were Bob Newlin, Bill Mahylis, Dave Davidson, Warren Schwab, Tom Jackson, Mary Frances Gosnell, and Joann Woodson.
Early Saturday morning the food and drinks were prepared. This included the pancakes, sausage, biscuits, cream chipped beef, home fries scrambled eggs, hot apples, orange juice, coffee and hot tea. Bake Sale/Craft Table items were accepted. We served about 300 people. Helpers were Lions Barbara and Tony Barry, Martin Carr, Dave Davidson, Ann Davis, Bernie Duplan, Chris Fletcher, Mary Frances Gosnell, Charlie and Tammy Hertel, George Hibbard, Su–Ling Huang, Charlie and Marcia Holpuch, Tom Jackson, Bill Mahylis, Jerry Mallack, Wayne Marr, Ray Molesworth, Bob Newlin, Jack Peters, Ken Phillips, Gary Rogers, Warren Schwab, Lee Sellers, Roy Stanley, Carol and Charlie Stone, Midge Tench, Mike Thornett, John Washington, Eloise and Tuck Woodfield and Joann Woodson. Leos from Middle and High Schools were Elizabeth Barry, Melodi Chalalk, Natalie Dagher, Keith Hansen, Samantha Hungerford, Candice Hertel, Courtney Kaczmarek, Katarina Leiby, Juanna Linden, Eleanor Ritter, Kelsey Turner and Paul Veby. Other volunteers were Stephanie Huang and Frann Peters. After all the bills are paid, we’ll announce the profit for the breakfast.
The Bake/Craft Table received item donations from Lions and Partners–in–Service Tess Gladhill, Mary Frances Gosnell, Irene Hardy, George & Viola Hibbard, Jonnie Jackson, Ray & Jennifer Molesworth, and Jack & Frann Peters, Ken & Sue Phillips, Carl Richards of Carol’s Creation and Joy Schwab. Monetary donations were given by Lion Helen Boyer and Bill Mahylis. Bake/Craft Table profit was $300.25.

Help Needed for White Cane Days May 5-8

Damascus Lions! Our next Damascus White Cane fundraiser is the week of May 5-8.
I will push the signup sheet around during this meeting and I’ll pick up the stragglers at the mid-April meeting. Folks: this fundraiser needs the participation of every able-bodied Damascus Lion for at least one two-hour shift. When the sign-up sheet reaches you, please contribute at least one shift; two, if you can. Every two shifts bring us enough funds to provide an eye appointment and new glasses for some needy Damascus-area child or adult. We will have shifts at both doors of Safeway this time, in the hopes that this will help us increase our collections there.

Big Band Dance – April 17

The Damascus Lions Club’s 2010 Big Band Dance is just around the corner. Be sure to mark Saturday, April 17th on your calendar. Dinner and dance (on wood floor) will be held at the Damascus American Legion Post 171 on Lewis Drive in Damascus, MD. Music will be provided by Roland Cumberland and his outstanding Orchestra, featuring “The Swing Set” vocalists trio.
Social hour including full setups will start at 6:00 PM, with dinner at 6:45 PM, followed by dancing from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Dinner also included, will be prepared and served by Paul Black of Tom & Ray’s in Damascus. The cost is $80 per couple; $40 for singles. [Read more...]
