White Cane Days Spring 2011

Thank you, all Lions who participated in our Spring 2011 White Cane fundraiser. We raised $1,674.44. This collection will fund about 16 eye appointments and new glasses for needy Damascus-area citizens. Only twenty-four Damascus Lions contributed to White Cane week this time; so many Lions had to work two or more shifts to make up the difference. Please put “Lion” in front of every name in this article. I can’t afford the fines.

Special Recognitions:

  • Three Over-$100-in-One-Shift Club Recognitions go to:
    • Charlie and Marcia Holpuch, who collected $167.88 at Red Rooster on Saturday.
    • George Hibbard, who collected $111.00  at Tom & Rays, also on Saturday.
    • Jack Peters, who collected $110.07 at Safeway on Wednesday evening.

Charlie Hertel and Barbara Barry just missed $100 by only a tiny bit each.

  • The Bert Lahr Special Award for Most Courageous Lion goes to the five Lions who worked four-hour shifts in order to fill the unassigned shift that followed them: these Lions were: Jack Peters, Charlie Hertel, George Hibbard, and the Holpuchs.

Here are the wonderful Damascus Lions who gave unselfishly of their time for one or more storefront collection shifts (multiple shifts in parentheses): Babb (First Time!!), B. Barry, Davidson, Davis, Dennell, Gladhill, Gosnell, C. Hertel (2), Hibbard(3), C. Holpuch (2), M. Holpuch (2), Mahylis, Mallack, Molesworth, Peters(2), Rogers, W. Schwab, Snapp, C. Stone, Ch. Stone, Suddath, B. Warfield, J. Warfield, Washington. Special thanks go to our reliable Managers of the Day: Bill Mahylis, Ken Phillips, and Del Mayhew…and to our ever-meticulous Money Counters: Del Mayhew, Gary Rogers, George Hibbard, and Vi Hibbard (George’s wife).

As always, when patronizing the Damascus establishments which support White Cane (CVS, Safeway, Tom & Ray’s, & Red Rooster), please express your gratitude to the management for allowing White Cane Lions to do our work there. They are critical to our success. Thanks.

Basket Bingo – Oct. 7th 2010

One more time the Damascus Lions have experienced a successful Basket Bingo supporting our Scholarship Program.  The DVFD Activities Building on Friday Night, October 7, was a buzz of bingo players eager to get their game cards, find their assigned seat, tackle some good food from the Fireman and spend some money on the games of chance.

After all the shaking of the bushes for ticket sales and basket sponsors, we started Friday night with all expenses paid in full.  So whatever was spent that evening was profit and that was a good feeling.  That good feeling could only come from the selflessness of individual Lions who sponsored baskets, sold abd bought tickets and rendered their time and energies on Thursday and Friday night.  Thank you, Lions, so much for your support.  Should anyone who sponsored a basket need a written receipt,, please contact Lion Mary Frances.  Letters and acknowledgement of sponsors/donations were mailed to non-Lions.  Should you see Fireman Ronnie Watkins, thank him for being our bingo caller.  And also, Fireman Mike Zeigler, thank him for taking care of our games of chance as well as helping with bingo winners on the floor.  There were also other fireman who helped with setting up of the tables and chairs as well as putting the chairs away. They made it easy for us!

Lion Tess Gladhill filled the baskets with the help of Mary Kay and Tastefully Simple consultant’s donations.  Lions Su and Shye donated a basket of wine and accessories and Lions Rusty and Dee donated a wheelbarrow full of wine, autumn décor , cheeses and accessories which was a separate raffle. Partner-In-Service, Jennifer Molesworth, worked packaging the bingo game cards and Special cards as well as did all the mailing of the fliers.

We sold 130 tickets for our bingo, 22 Lions put in approximately 200 hours on the project and we earned a profit of $4900.  WOW, Can’t believe it!

Thanks to all of you, Lions and Partners-in-service, for your support.  You are the best!

Ice Cream Dipping Fundraiser

By Lion Charlie Hertel; aka the “Little Dipper”

What a great year it was dipping ice cream at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair on Tuesday,  August 17, 2010.  The Damascus Lions Club, along with the Damascus High School Leos, the Baker MS and Rocky Hill MS Leos, and all the partners–in–service did an outstanding job. Tuesday was senior day at the fair and Damascus sold $8,020.57 worth of ice cream.

Thank you to Lion Doug and Lion Gerta from Laytonsville who ran the ice cream parlor during the week in the pm shift and to our very own lion Gary Rogers for his am shift work, in running the parlor all week.

Also I would like to thank all the Lions who went to the dairy barn on Saturday mornings before the fair started and made the building look so nice. Thank you to the Lions Barry (Barbara & Tony) for stocking all the ice cream into the bins with me on Wednesday before the fair started.

I would like thank my wife, Lion Tammy, for giving instructions to all the young Leo volunteers all day behind the counter and for help run the ice cream parlor.  And I would like to thank my family who are always involved in our club activities. I would also like to thank the Leo advisers and all their efforts bringing the kids to the ice cream parlor.  Without them this would not have been the great success that it was. Our Damascus Lions Club members turned out in great show of support this year and I would like to thank all of them. It is so nice to just have people stop in and visit for the day, it means a lot!!!

I did some calculations and we had over 75 people come in and work in the ice cream booth that day. There were 450 man hours spent running the ice cream parlor. Our lions club will bring in $1,667.00 for our single day at the fair. What a great job we all did. Thank you for your continued support.

Celebrate Damascus Flea Market

by Tess Gladhill

What started out as a rainy morning turned out to be a pleasant afternoon. But by the time the rain cleared the car show had been cancelled & half of the flea market vendors decided not to come out. We did collect our money because it was a rain or shine event that was prepaid. So we ended up with 41 spaces sold for $820.00 plus a $20 member donation.

The club also had a flea market space and due to the “HIGH PRESSURE SALES PERSONS” at our space we were able to walk away with $401.50 off of our donated goodies from our Lions. Lion Gary Rogers had brought out the Lion Pins donated by Lion Margaret Duvall from Lion Rodney’s collection. Some of these were also sold to bring in a nice sum of money for the club, not included in the above amount of money.

Worker Lions include Jerry Mallack, Bernie Duplan, Su Huang, Joy Schwab, Warren Schwab, Mary Frances Gosnell, Midge Tench, Marcia Holpuch, Gary Rogers, Chris Fletcher, Wayne Marr and Tess Gladhill.

Thanks to all who helped to make this a great success again.
