I can’t believe it’s November already – 2013 is almost over. The weather is also very fall like with frost in the garden and on my windshield!
Charter night was a big success. We had 48 people in attendance including our speaker, District Governor Dee Hawkins and her “arm candy” husband PDG Paul. IPP John Washington awarded the Emerson Slacum Award to Lion Midge Tench. Her son, Bill, was there to receive it on her behalf. We were able to speak to Lion Midge on the phone and she was as chipper as ever teasing Lion John about being too cheap to buy a crab cake! IPP John made an excellent choice when deciding who to give the service award to.
On Saturday October 5 a few Lions attempted to do a preschool vision screening at McDonalds. We were seated in the front of McDonalds near the registers. It was too bright and too loud for the cameras. Unfortunately we had quite a few children show up but we were not able to get a good reading. I was outside in the Lion costume (it was a warm morning) trying to get more business. We have decided to reschedule our preschool vision screening to Dec. 7 at Gladhill’s. We will compete with Santa that day.
I was pleased to see many Lions dress up for Halloween in costumes on our October 15 meeting. We had some western people, Goldie Hawn, laundry, a witch, Brain Burger Zombie, two jack-o-lanterns, and two Leopards! It was a fun night and our guest speaker Paul Layer gave us an informative talk on the Montgomery County speed cameras from a citizen’s point of view.
There is a change in the holiday baskets this year. Faith Connections, an organization that serves upper Montgomery County will be hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner to families who live in the 20872 zip code area. We will not be delivering Thanksgiving baskets to families this year. If you’d like to help out with the dinner let me know and I can direct you to the people in charge of it. This change does not affect Christmas baskets. We will still collect from the local canned food drives, sort food and make food boxes. Lions will shop for clothes for the local children and the motorcycle club will still donate toys. More information will be coming out soon.
We had another successful pancake breakfast on Saturday October 19. Many people showed up to enjoy our famous hot meal. I believe the bake table also did well. It definitely had plenty of baked goods and other goodies to sell. It was great seeing Lions Bobbie & John Warfield also enjoying the breakfast.
It was very difficult to say good bye to one of our own, Lion Bill Mahylis. The Lions showed up in strength to offer condolences to Lion Bill’s family. Thank you.
This time of year reminds me of how important family and friends are in our lives. When you see a fellow Lion show them how you Appreciate, Believe in and especially Care for them.
Enjoy this cool weather!
